In the rush of everyday life, one of the last concerns of those who wear makeup is cleaning their brushes. However, in contact with the skin, cosmetics and the environment, they can become the perfect place for the proliferation of microorganisms.

According to research conducted by UK cosmetics company Spectrum Collections, supported by cosmetic scientist Carly Musleh, not cleaning your makeup brushes can leave them as dirty as a toilet seat.

In the study, Published this Wednesday (4/12), the team analyzed two sets of foundation brushes, one clean and one dirty, which they used as a test run for two weeks. The result was compared to a sample taken from a toilet bowl.

The samples revealed that all the dirty makeup brushes had potential traces of E.Coli, yeast and mold that can lead to fungal infections, while the clean objects had significantly less bacteria present. Both types of brushes had more pathogens than the toilet bowl.

Faced with the result, Spectrum Collections asked its core customers how often they clean their brushes. About 40% of respondents confessed that they wash the objects every two weeks and 20% admitted to sanitizing them every one to three months.

Carly recommends cleaning your makeup brushes at least once a week to remove any bacteria present. “Many of us use them on a daily basis to apply a variety of different products, but many times we go weeks or months without cleaning them,” she points out.

It’s worth remembering that not all bacteria are harmful: the human skin microbiome, for example, contains many different types of microorganisms that can help keep the skin barrier healthy and protect people from pathogens that cause infections.

“Using dirty brushes can increase the risk of an imbalance in the healthy microbial community and lead to an increase in the number of pathogenic microorganisms, causing outbreaks or more serious problems, such as impetigo or staphylococcal infections”, warns the scientist.

The expert also highlighted the importance of cleaning the correct parts of the brush. She teaches that you shouldn’t submerge the metal part in water, as this can damage the object. Be sure to clean the center and bottom of the bristles, which can become the ideal space for bacteria to accumulate.

The researchers also analyzed the storage of the brushes in five different areas (dressing table in the bedroom, makeup bag, brush bag, drawer and holder in the bathroom) and found that in each location, the dirty brushes contained the same or more bacteria than than the toilet seat.
