A man was shot in the face at a packed waterfront restaurant in Malaga’s Muelle Uno marina, leaving him in critical condition and sparking an active manhunt for two gunmen. The late-night ambush sent diners and families fleeing in terror across the Costa del Sol shopping area, with bystanders initially confusing the gunfire for firecrackers.

Late-Night Waterfront Ambush

Spain’s National Police confirmed that the victim, born in 1979 and widely reported locally to be a 47-year-old Turkish national, was targeted around 10:30 p.m. at Lounge Bar Plaza. The Mediterranean eatery, located on the port’s waterfront promenade, offers open-air terrace seating with views of the harbor and yachts.

Diners Scatter Amidst World Cup Crowds

According to local media reports, the man had driven to the restaurant from a nearby hotel and was dining with another man and two women when the attack occurred. Photographs published in the aftermath showed the wounded man lying on his front on the terrace floor, covered in blood, while a security guard and another man wearing gloves rushed to assist him.

The violent incident disrupted a particularly busy evening along the waterfront. The area had drawn larger crowds than usual because the World Cup trophy won by Spain’s national team in July was on public display at the Pompidou Centre, located just a minute’s walk from Muelle Uno. Many families with children had chosen to dine at nearby restaurants after viewing the trophy exhibition, which ran until 9 p.m.

Witnesses Detail Panic on the Promenade

“The surprising thing was that there were a lot of police in the area,” one witness told local press, while another noted that many children were still in the vicinity following the exhibition.

Officers quickly cordoned off the promenade with police tape as emergency responders transported the victim to a Malaga hospital, where he remains in critical condition. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

Rising Gun Violence in Malaga

The attack marks the second shooting in Malaga in less than a week. The previous Friday, a 20-year-old man identified as Nacho died after being shot in the leg and back during a broad-daylight attack in a city-center square. Police subsequently arrested three Swedish nationals of Somali origin in connection with that case.

Investigators working on Friday’s homicide concluded that the victim, who had no criminal record, was likely mistaken by his attackers for a rival hitman due to his clothing and a man bag he was carrying.
