Princess Tengku Puteri Ilyana Alia of Malaysia and British racing driver Christopher Lionel Froggatt celebrated their multi-day wedding in Kuala Lumpur on August 7, blending royal Malay traditions with international motorsport glamour at the Shangri-La Hotel.
A Royal Celebration in Kuala Lumpur
The multi-day festivities brought together Malaysian royal customs and elements inspired by the groom’s career in circuit racing. Princess Ilyana, 29, is the daughter of Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, the sixth Sultan of Pahang who served as Malaysia’s 16th king from 2019 to 2024. Her mother is former actress Julia Rais. Her 32-year-old husband competes professionally in international GT competition.
The solemnisation ceremony took place on August 7 at the Shangri-La Hotel, presided over by Sultan Abdullah. Members of the Pahang royal household attended the event, including Regent and Crown Prince of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah alongside his younger siblings. Other prominent guests included Pahang Chief Minister Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates.
Traditional Islamic Customs and Royal Rituals
The wedding followed Islamic and Malay royal traditions. According to the Kesultanan Pahang’s official Facebook page, Froggatt performed the sunnah prayer before the couple processed to the dais. The proceedings included the presentation of the mas kahwin
marriage gift, the exchange of wedding rings, and recitation of prayers.
The couple then participated in the merenjis
ritual, which involves sprinkling scented water as a symbolic blessing for their well-being. Following the ceremonies, the Royal Household of Pahang released an official statement extending formal wishes to the newlyweds.

Fashion played a central role in the multi-day event. Princess Ilyana wore a gown designed by Malaysian designer Radzuan Radziwill. To complete her bridal look, she chose the diamond tiara belonging to Queen Azizah. The dramatic heirloom tiara was originally acquired from Belgian jeweller Wolfers in Brussels and has been worn by members of the Pahang royal family at past weddings.

While the bride comes from one of Malaysia’s nine hereditary royal families, her husband has built a career on international racing circuits.
His racing biography notes an unusual path into the sport compared to drivers who begin karting in early childhood. Growing up with an interest in quad bikes and motocross, he arrived at competitive circuit racing at age 24. A pivotal Ferrari high-performance driving event at the Fiorano test track in Italy, attended as a guest of a close friend, served as his turning point toward professional motorsport.
