A man drowned at the Bundesbad on the Old Danube in Vienna on Saturday morning. According to Christian Feiler, spokesman for the professional fire department, people discovered unattended clothing and a backpack and alerted the emergency services at around 8:15 a.m. The owner couldn’t be found, so the professional fire department responded with three diving vehicles. Two more fire department divers were picked up by the Vienna rescue helicopter “Christophorus 9” and flown to the scene of the accident.

The area was searched using, among other things, an underwater scooter. The lifeless man was ultimately located by the firefighters in the helicopter. The divers rescued the man and brought him to shore. An emergency doctor could only determine death.

The professional fire brigade was on duty with 34 members and seven vehicles. In an interview with the APA, Feiler appealed on this occasion to contact the professional fire brigade first in the event of a swimming accident in order to avoid unnecessary loss of time in the search for the accident victims. “Especially when it comes to swimming accidents, every second counts,” said Feiler. “If we are the first to be contacted, we can begin the search without unnecessary loss of time.”
