Man escaped from Mittersteig forensic prison

A prisoner escaped from the forensic therapeutic center on Mittersteig in Vienna-Margareten on Monday at lunchtime. An immediate police search was negative, as the APA was told. An intensive search continued for the man. According to reports, the man may have taken advantage of his position as a houseworker in the prison and escaped over scaffolding that was attached to the facade of the house.

The Vienna police asked anyone who noticed the escapee during or after his escape to contact the police. Information (also anonymous) was requested to the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, Mitte branch, on 01-31310-43800.

Forensic therapeutic centers (formerly: institutions for mentally abnormal lawbreakers) accommodate people who have committed certain crimes under the significant influence of a serious and lasting mental disorder and who are also considered dangerous – and who are therefore to be feared that they will commit further crimes commit serious criminal offenses. A distinction is made between perpetrators who were mentally incapacitated due to this disorder at the time of the crime and those who were not.
