A man faces up to 25 years in prison for covering up his mother’s death. He pocketed more than €760,000 in social benefits

The State seems to be more and more vigilant about fraud with respect to family allowances. Man faces up to 25 years in prison for covering up his mother’s death for more than 30 years ! We tell you everything!

Man sentenced for hiding his mother’s death

A 65-year-old man finds himself in a big quagmire. Eh yes ! Donald Felix Zampach risks paying dearly for hiding his mother’s death. Yet he continued to receive all social benefits. But also his military retirement. And this, for more than 32 years!

This situation did not occur in France! Indeed, this sexagenarian is from Poway, California (United States). While living with his mother, he stopped giving news, although she has been dead for more than 32 years. Donald Felix Zampach’s mom breathed her last in 1990 while living in Japan.

Obviously, Donald Felix Zampach is very clever! Because before she died, he did everything possible to obtain ownership of the family home.

If the police took an interest in his case, it was because he said he was bankrupt. However, he continued to receive family allowances. And that’s not all ! Know that for 32 years, until 2022, this man also imitated his mother’s signature to maintain his accounts and carry out transactions.

Moreover ! He also used his mother’s identity to to open several bank accounts. It made him a lot of money. Or €25,000 in total, according to our colleagues from USA Today.

Faced with the scale of the situation, the American police therefore came to his home to arrest him. The situation is so burlesque that it made the headlines. Especially that of The Guardian! The media therefore relayed this information in an article which was also mentioned by BFMTV this Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

Social benefits: more and more fraud

The man in question must therefore appear in federal court. Imagine that he therefore pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering. Because he’s been on social benefits all this time. But he struggled to confess his mother’s death:

“When investigators caught up with him, he continued to claim she was still alive,” says Randy Grossman, attorney general for the Southern District of California, in a statement. More so, this man also concealed all the money he received. So for now, he risk up to 25 years in prison.

During his hearing, Donald Felix Zampach told the whole truth. He explains that he laundered money to pay off the mortgage on the family home. In total, he would have received €760,000 in family allowances.

No choice, Donald Felix Zampach must therefore reimburse the sum of social allowances. He also lost his home. Then while awaiting trial, he was released on bail. The latter will take place on September 20, 2023.

In France, fraud is also very numerous. This is therefore the reason why Gabriel Attal plans to fight against it in 2023! He explains that the benefit scams CAF stands at 351 million euros.

“Today, to receive the minimum old age. Or family allowances, so you have to spend six months in France, to receive the APL, you have to spend eight months in France, to receive the RSA, you have to spend nine months in France. »
