A man in North Dakota, USA, inherited a large inheritance worth approximately US$30 million (approximately NT$970 million) in September. He then broke up with his girlfriend. The woman was suspected of being worried that she would not receive part of the property and actually fed the man. Antifreeze, ruthless killing. Investigators currently believe the motive for the crime is related to money.

According to comprehensive foreign media reports, 51-year-old Steven Riley Jr. met with a lawyer on September 3 to collect his inheritance. At that time, he was already experiencing physical abnormalities, but his girlfriend Ina Thea Kenoyer called 911 for help the next day. When paramedics arrived, Riley had already lost consciousness and unfortunately passed away on September 5.

The autopsy results determined that Riley was poisoned due to ingestion of antifreeze. Investigators pointed out that “this case is extremely complex.” It is currently determined that the motive for the crime is related to money, but the investigation of the case is still ongoing.

After being arrested, Kenoye claimed that as Riley’s de facto wife, she had the right to inherit part of Riley’s estate, and she planned to share it with her son, but the state did not recognize de facto marriages. Kenoye is now charged with felony murder, the most serious murder charge in North Dakota, and is being held in custody without bail.

In fact, there have been at least four cases of killing spouses or partners with poison in the United States this year. They include a children’s book author who poisoned her husband with a fatal dose of fentanyl at home in May, and a dentist in Colorado who added arsenic to his wife’s milkshake and murdered his wife in March.
