(Taiwan English News / Reported by Zhu Mingzhu Comprehensive Foreign News) Extreme weather such as heat waves, floods and droughts in Europe has encouraged the breeding of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, and diseases transmitted by vector mosquitoes are raging locally. According to statistics from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), as of On May 31, there were more than 1,300 reported cases of indigenous West Nile virus infection in Europe.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a press release on the 22nd stating that 10 countries in the European Union and the European Economic Area have reported a total of more than 1,100 local cases of West Nile virus infection, the highest since 2018. The highest number of infections since the peak of the epidemic last year, among which Italy and Greece reported the highest number of cases, with 723 and 283 cases respectively.

The exacerbation of extreme climate around the world has boosted the number of vector mosquitoes and caused the vector mosquitoes to move northward. Cases have been reported as far as Denmark and Sweden, and even moved to higher altitudes. In addition to dengue fever, these vector mosquitoes can also transmit malaria, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, West Nile Virus and Zika Virus etc.

Andrea Ammon, director of ECDC, reminded that acute infectious diseases transmitted by vector mosquito bites have been raging in Europe in recent years, and the scope has continued to spread. It is expected that more people will die due to dengue fever or chikungunya disease. He called on all countries to pay attention to controlling the number of mosquitoes, strengthen monitoring and Take personal protective measures.

According to the data from my country’s CDC, the incubation period of West Nile virus infection is about 2-14 days. Most of the infected cases have no obvious symptoms, and about 20% of the patients will develop West Nile Fever. A febrile disease caused by a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes, birds are the main hosts of West Nile virus in nature.

Symptoms include sudden fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches and weakness, occasional gastrointestinal symptoms, and a very short-lived rash on the trunk and extremities; most of the symptomatic patients will improve on their own.

West Nile virus disease is treated in a supportive manner. Severe cases are usually hospitalized, intravenous drips, respirators, etc. There is currently no vaccine to prevent it.
