Manchester City manages to defeat Sporting Lisbon in the round of 16 of the Champions League

Sporting, who had outplayed Borussia Dortmund in the group stage, went into the game full of confidence and roaring in support from 49,000 fans.

But it only lasted a few minutes before the guest from Manchester nipped the hope of a sensation in the bud and made it 1-0 through Riyad Mahrez (7th). Pep Guardiola’s team then played like unleashed and a short time later put the 2 :0 after a dream goal by Bernardo Silva.

In the course of a corner, the ball tumbled through the penalty area before Silva hammered the ball under the crossbar from a good 15 meters with a volley dropkick (17th). On the Sporting side, only Paulinho caused a bit of a threat going forward, but it did not result in more than a long-range shot over the goal (29′).

The English are completely different. Mahrez, who was extremely enthusiastic about the game, left two opponents standing while dribbling and served Phil Foden in the six-yard box, who easily netted to make it 3-0 (32nd).

Shortly before the break, the guests even added a goal. Raheem Sterling was sent to the front with a long pass, skilfully danced out the defender and then put it back on Silva, who in turn made it 4-0 (42nd).

The second half began similarly to the first, but this time only with Silva “almost 5:0” (50th). However, when Kevin De Bruyne crossed, Silva was just offside and the headed goal rightly didn’t count.

However, it didn’t take long before Raheem Sterling actually made it 5-0. With a wonderful shot from a good 20 meters into the right corner of the goal, the Englishman sealed a lesson in football for the Sporting team.

The voices:

Bernardo Silva (Manchester City): “It was a very good performance today! I think the 4-0 in the first half didn’t quite match the course of the game, we were a bit careless in places – but we used our chances on the offensive all the better. But a 5-0 is always a great result.”

Pep Guardiola (Trainer Manchester City): “I’m not satisfied with the performance of all the players. We lost the ball a lot easily, and that doesn’t go unpunished against other opponents. However, our chance conversion tonight was outstanding. Especially at the beginning, Sporting were very strong – I don’t think that the 5-0 in the end reflects the difference between the two teams.”

The tweet about the game:

For the third time this Champions League season, Manchester City have scored at least five goals in one game. That should have given the Englishmen due respect in any competition in the tournament.

That was noticeable: ManCity is serious

Manchester City were far superior in every respect tonight and even if the opposition didn’t pose an enormous challenge for Pep Guardiola’s team – with this impressive 5-0 win the competition in the fight for this year’s title should be warned.

The stats: 200

Sterling’s 5-0 was Manchester City’s 200th goal in Champions League history.
