Manggarai Clashes: 6 Detained After Fireworks Unrest

A staggering three distinct waves of violence shattered the weekend calmness outside Stasiun Manggarai in Tebet, South Jakarta, on Sunday, October 18, 2026. What began as volatile group provocation fueled by fireworks quickly spiraled into destructive clashes, culminating in the targeted looting and burning of neighborhood businesses, according to reporting by detikNews.

Three Waves of Violence and Business Destruction

The unrest unfolded in rapid succession from the early hours of the morning, continuing through daylight, and flaring up once more right before Magrib. Unlike previous altercations typically confined to the nearby underpass, this confrontation spilled directly into the commercial area in front of the station, as detailed by Kumparan.com. Groups of youths engaged in aggressive exchanges, resulting in the burning of a local resident’s food stall, extensive damage to a banana vendor’s cart belonging to a merchant named Mpok Nur, and the destruction of multiple motorcycles left in the path of the rioters.

Amid the chaos, a local phone credit kiosk fell victim to marauding crowds looking to settle scores. A merchant named Dimas recounted how he and fellow traders gathered inside their shop to brace for the onslaught, anticipating the looting that had plagued past incidents. The attackers shattered the storefront glass, smashed display jars, and made off with power chargers and mobile phone SIM cards resting near the front of the counter.

Official Responses and Structural Intervention

Law enforcement authorities moved swiftly to regain control of the area. Personnel from the Metro Jakarta Selatan Police and the Tebet Sector Police, alongside the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Municipal Police (Satpol PY), deployed to the scene to disperse the crowd. According to Metro Jakarta Selatan Police Chief Senior Commissioner I Putu Yuni Setiawan, officers successfully managed the situation without any reported injuries or fatalities, leaving the two-way traffic flow around the station completely conducive by nightfall.

Police confirmed that six individuals were detained immediately following the clashes for suspected involvement in the fireworks-driven provocation. Authorities are currently investigating the specific roles of each suspect. To maintain stability, the Jakarta Provincial Government, alongside military and police leadership, announced plans to establish a joint security post directly at the location. Furthermore, South Jakarta Syafrin Liputo noted that municipal authorities are accelerating the construction of a multifunctional sports field near the station, utilizing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds to provide local youths with constructive outlets for their energy.

The Persistent Cycle of Community Conflict

Jakarta Pramono Anung expressed profound disappointment over the recurring violence in Manggarai, noting that administrations have actively sought long-term solutions by delivering requested public athletic facilities. Despite these interventions, underlying tensions and perceived rivalries between localized factions continue to trigger violent outbursts. In response to the persistent unrest, the Jakarta Provincial Government, police, and regional youth representatives have formalized an agreement to install a permanent joint monitoring post to intercept potential clashes before they materialize.
