Netflix has ordered a sci-fi spinoff titled Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, reuniting original creator Jeff Rake with co-showrunners Margaret Easley and Laura Putney.

Exactly five years to the minute after announcing its revival of the original supernatural drama, Netflix greenlighted the sci-fi offshoot in a deliberate nod to the fandom’s annual celebration. The announcement arrived precisely on August 28 — a date known to followers of the franchise as 8/28, mirroring the pivotal Montego Air flight at the heart of the mothership series. While the original supernatural drama wrapped its narrative arc across four seasons, the streamer is returning to the well with an entirely fresh narrative architecture.
The upcoming offshoot features a brand-new cast of characters and a distinct premise. The official logline states that a mysterious aircraft touches down in Denver carrying passengers who retain zero recollection of who they are, where they originated, or what brought them there. A young social worker and a novice Homeland Security agent team up with the bewildered survivors to avert a humanity-ending catastrophe, gradually uncovering that they form integral pieces of the very puzzle they are trying to solve.
Creative Continuity Under the Original Showrunners
Creative continuity remains a cornerstone of the new project. Series creator Jeff Rake is teaming up with former co-executive producers Margaret Easley and Laura Putney. In their expanded roles, Easley and Putney step up as co-creators and co-showrunners alongside Rake, steering the production alongside Warner Bros. Television as the studio.

The greenlight follows massive viewership figures for the franchise on the platform. After NBC canceled the original series following its three-season broadcast run from 2018 to 2021, Netflix rescued the supernatural drama for a fourth and final season split into two parts. Since the first half of 2023, all four seasons combined have amassed more than 130 million views on the platform.
Season 4 proved to be a powerhouse for the streamer, spending nine weeks on the Global Top 10 English TV list and reaching the top spot in over 90 countries. Netflix leadership emphasized that bringing back the foundational creative team is designed to respect the elements that turned the original premise into a global cultural phenomenon.

Production Timeline and What Remains Unannounced
Development on the project has moved quietly through multiple stages over the last few years. Whispers of a potential extension first circulated after the release of Season 4 Part 2 in June 2023. By the end of 2024, the project was formally in development, opening a dedicated writers room by the close of 2025 and beginning director meetings earlier in August.
Despite the official series order, key details regarding casting remain under wraps. No actors have been attached to the project, and producers have not disclosed whether any familiar faces from the original flight’s manifest will make guest appearances in the new Denver-set mystery.
