From evolution, the human species received two great gifts: a big brain and, at least on the male side, a big penis. On average and erect, the male sex is calibrated around 131 millimeters in length, 35 millimeters in diameter and 116 millimeters in circumference.

Perhaps not saying it like that, but the fact is that, all things considered, we are at double the chimpanzeeour closest cousin, and five times the gorilla, certainly a little further away on the primate family tree, but still archvirile. Not to mention that it’s not just the size of his penis that makes a man unique.

“Path dependence”

Because with its terminal swelling of the glans like a mushroom cap, connected to the penis by a thin strip of mucous tissue, the frenulum, just below the urethra, the shape of the human penis is completely unique in the animal kingdom in in general, and apelike in particular. A morphological specificity redoubled by the coronal crest of the glans which, at the place of its junction with the penis, exceeds it in width.

Why is the human penis this shape? And what is it for? In evolutionary biologythe answers to these questions do not necessarily lead to an adaptation stricto sensu – a trait which would have directly given its carriers a competitive advantage in terms of survival and, above all, reproduction.
