Manuscript by Charlotte Brontë offered at auction for more than a million dollars

This manuscript is smaller than a playing card, but it contains a literary treasure that will go on sale for 1.25 million dollars, or 1.138 million euros, at a book fair in New York at the end of the month, reports CNN in an article from Friday, April 1. The author of Jane EyreCharlotte Brontë, had written it when she was 13 years old in December 1829. Entitled “A book of rhythms by Charlotte Brontë, sold by no one and printed by herself”, the latter comprises ten poems.

He would not have been seen in public since … 1916, specifies CNN, and would have been found in a private collection. Its owner now wishes to ensure that the fifteen-page manuscript is preserved for future generations”, reports the media. The author would have written on the title page of the manuscript: “The following are attempts at rhyme of an inferior nature , it must be recognized, but these are nevertheless my best”, details CNN.

In the poems, we find the “sophisticated imaginary world” of Charlotte Brontë and her brothers and sisters, relates the press release of the sellers. “They wrote adventure stories, dramas and verse in handmade manuscript books filled with tiny handwriting meant to look like block letters,” the statement added. Charlotte Brontë and her sisters Emily and Anne have written novels that have left their mark on English and world literature, such as Jane Eyre appeared in 1847. By 2011, another of Brontë’s tiny manuscripts had sold for $1.07 million, or almost a million euros.
