Mapping Air Quality Disparities in Belgium: European Standards Exceeded in Many Places

Although the data showed an improvement in air quality compared to the past, the results from the measuring points also showed a large disparity between municipalities. However, they did not show any excess of European standards (i.e. a concentration of 40 g/m³ NO2).

“When I started to zoom in on the air quality map in Belgium, I felt silence settle in my class”

To get a more precise picture, BRAL and Brussels Environment have decided to install 24 nitrogen dioxide measuring points for an analysis which should last a year. They were placed in places known to be polluted such as Sainctelette, Porte de Flandre, Avenue Fonsny, or even the Barrière de Saint-Gilles.

The first intermediate results (from June to September) show that this time, European standards are exceeded in many places, for example a concentration of 58 ?g/m³ NO2 was measured at Porte de Flandre or even up to 72 .9 58 ?g/m³ NO2 on avenue de la Toison d’Or.
