The holiday countdown has officially begun. Mariah Carey kicked off the festivities on Wednesday evening, firmly establishing the Christmas spirit in a conquered Bell Center and, above all, happy to reunite with her idol after an absence of more than 13 years.
Gargantuan snowflakes, giant candy canes, oversized Christmas trees, tinkling bells, Santa Claus in the flesh… clearly, Mariah Carey doesn’t do things by halves when she’s trying to create a holiday atmosphere. She was a feast for the eyes – and ears – of her approximately 14,800 “lambs” gathered inside the Bell Centre, who had patiently awaited the return of the American singer to the metropolis since February 2010.
These festive reunions were, however, temporarily overshadowed on a few occasions by sound problems, with the speakers crackling loudly at the start of the evening.
One voice (and that’s it)
Let’s say it frankly, the American diva is not what one could describe as a stage beast. Her movements on stage are extremely limited, with Mariah Carey preferring to waddle limply or pose on the boards rather than dance. And despite everything, she even takes a break to touch up her hair and makeup directly on stage after just a few songs.
But she obviously makes up for this lack of energy – and charisma – with her phenomenal vocal prowess. The heights that she reaches in each of the titles revisited on stage are impressive, as is her astonishing mastery of her instrument, both in the bass and in her ethereal whistles.
And that is, after all, why we travel to see a Mariah Carey performance. We suspect very well that the singer’s admirers do not hold it against her for her casual and detached attitude. They rather reveled in his Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Silent Night, Joy to the World and obviously, All I Want for Christmas Is Youreserved for the very end of the concert.
Christmas…and the hits
Despite all the efforts made to create a holiday atmosphere inside the amphitheater, Mariah Carey insisted on deviating from the theme to devote a long medley composed of essentials from her repertoire. Always Be My Baby, Honey, Heartbreaker, Dreamlover, Emotions, Make It Happen and others We Belong Together came to diversify the evening’s program, each of these titles having been received with enthusiasm and enthusiasm by noisy admirers.
It is therefore the voice of Mariah Carey that we will remember from this tour Merry Christmas One and All!, much more than the presence on stage of the American idol. Fortunately, Mariah Carey is surrounded by an imposing, hyper-slick and well-honed production that throws enough smoke and mirrors and elegantly coats the singer’s voice.
