Mariano Ruiz-Esquide, former DC senator and historic opponent of the dictatorship, dies – La Discusión 2024-02-21 14:41:33

This Saturday morning, the death of the former DC senator and historic signer of the “Declaration of the 13”, Mariano Ruiz-Esquide, was confirmed at the age of 93.

Ruiz-Esquide, a surgeon by profession, was a deputy from 1965 until the military coup in September 1973, an antidemocratic act that he rejected along with other DC militants in the well-known “Letter of the 13.”

In that letter, the 13 signatories disagreed with the official position of the community to categorically condemn the overthrow of President Salvador Allende.

After the return to democracy, he served as senator for the 13th Southern Constituency, in the Biobío Region, from 1990 to 2014, when he decided not to run for re-election for a new term.

Among the recognitions received, the National Human Rights Award in 1995 stands out, awarded by the Chilean Human Rights Commission in the Children’s Rights category.

With the death of Ruiz-Esquide, lawyer Jorge Donsoso is the only surviving member of the remembered “Group of 13.”

The regional presidential delegate, Anwar Farrán Veloso, lamented the death of the former parliamentarian and maintained that he was “a man who embodied the values of progressivism and democracy. We are talking about a former senator, a former deputy who not only signed the Charter of the Thirteen condemning the 1973 coup d’état, but also worked tirelessly for our area representing Ñuble in the Senate when we were not yet a region. Our most sincere condolences to his family for the departure of the historic Christian Democracy activist.”
