While the MCU has been going through a difficult phase since the end of Avengers: Endgame, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was expected at the turn. If the film receives very positive opinions from the press and spectators, the figures are less good on the box office side.

The Guardians of the Galaxy, the darlings of the MCU

Unknown to the general public when they first appeared on screen in 2014, The Guardians of the Galaxy have quickly established themselves as being among the most endearing characters in the MCU. Almost ten years later, space’s most famous band of gorgeous losers return for a third and final adventure to bid farewell to fans. It must be said that in the meantime, James Gunn, the director of the trilogy, went to the stable opposite, becoming the boss of DC Studios.

Despite his position in the “opposing” camp, the 56-year-old filmmaker delivered an excellent conclusion to his characters, as the opinions are so positive. If the press displays a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, the spectators are even more enthusiastic with a cumulative index of 95%. For this reason, some do not hesitate to call it the best MCU film since Avengers: Endgame, which still dates back to 2019. However, despite this very positive word of mouth, the box office does not seem to live up to the enthusiasm around the feature film.

Falling revenue for Marvel and Disney?

In the Hollywood movie industry, the first weekend is huge in terms of revenue as it sets the tone for the weeks to come which are normally down in terms of revenue. It is for this reason that it is an important indicator. Thus, we took that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 grossed $118 million at the worldwide box office in its first weekend of release. While that’s an impressive sum, you have to put those numbers into perspective with previous MCU productions.

If we compare with the episode before, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 had generated $146 million during its first weekend of operation in 2017. And if we want to put into perspective facing another highly anticipated project from the MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness raised $186 million. Despite everything, James Gunn’s latest film can boast of being ahead of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which only raised $106 million and should end its theatrical run with “only” $475 million. . Generally speaking, since Spider-Man: No Way Home, MCU movies no longer manage to pass the billion-dollar mark generated, although the second Doctor Strange was not far from reaching him. It remains to be seen where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will end its run.
