Massive Attack have become the latest act – and first major-label one – to pull their catalog from Spotify in protest at founder Daniel Ek’s €600m (£520m) investment in military AI company helsing. The band join King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hotline TNT, Deerhoof and Wu Lyf in removing their music from the platform.

Ek’s venture capital firm Prima materia led Helsing‘s latest funding round in June. Helsing’s software uses AI technology to analyze battlefield data for military decisions and also manufactures it’s own military drone, the HX-2.

In a statement, Massive Attack said the decision was unconnected to the current campaign blocking music from streaming services in Israel (No Music for Genocide), but addressed a separate ethical concern.”In our view, the historic precedent of effective artist action during apartheid South Africa and the apartheid, war crimes and genocide now being committed by the state of Israel renders the No Music for Genocide campaign imperative,” they said.

“In the separate case of Spotify, the economic burden that has long been placed on artists is now compounded by a moral and ethical burden, whereby the hard-earned money of fans and the creative endeavors of musicians ultimately funds lethal, dystopian technologies,” the statement continued.

A Spotify spokesperson said,”Spotify and helsing are two totally separate companies.” They added that Helsing was “not involved in Gaza” and that its efforts were “focused on Europe defending itself in Ukraine.” Helsing maintain that its technology is “deployed to European countries for deterrence and for defense against the Russian aggression in Ukraine only.”
