Master of Steel: Richard Serra is dead

It was as a result of pneumonia that Richard Serra died on Tuesday at the age of 85 in his home in New York. He stood for iconic steel works and was considered one of the most important sculptors of today.

Serra was born on November 2, 1938 in San Francisco to a Spanish father and a Russian mother. Already in his youth he came into contact with “his” future material: he worked in steelworks.

After studying (English literature, art) he moved to New York, where he began creating art from materials such as metal, fiberglass and rubber. “I don’t believe that art has the task of pleasing,” the American once said, and that’s exactly how he approached his work: his works are large, hard, uncompromising, provocative, and change the viewer’s perception of space and space Challenge the environment. For example, in Germany, where many of his sculptures were created, he created the work “Torque” in 1992: it stands on a traffic island in front of Saarbrücken University, is 16.70 meters high and weighs a good 200 tons. In 2005, the walk-in installation “The Matter of Time” was created for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It consists of eight gigantic steel figures.
