The Dutch driver from Red Bull completed the 4.361 kilometers of the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit in 1:25.858. The German Nico Hulkenberg achieved a remarkable performance by grabbing 2nd place on the grid, 1.244 from poleman.

The Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), 3rd at 1,428, is ahead of the British duo from Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton at 1,769 and George Russell at 2,035. Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine) is 6th and Briton Lando Norris (McLaren) 7th. The Spaniard from Ferrari, Carlos Sainz, finished 8th ahead of the Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and the surprising Thai Alexander Albon, in his Williams.

Qualifying began on a track that was still wet, and the drivers chose intermediate tyres. The repeated passages of the racing cars on the racing line nevertheless made it possible to dry it out, and the teams found themselves faced with a decision between intermediate tires and slick tires at the start of Q2.

The Monegasque Charles Leclerc experienced another disappointment, complaining virulently on the radio that the tires were not ready, causing his early exit in Q2. The Mexican Sergio Pérez, teammate of Verstappen, will be alongside Leclerc in 6th row on the grid.

In Q3, the reigning world champion recorded his winning time before Oscar Piastri caused a red flag by crashing out of turn 6. The rain picked up again during the interruption, hence the significant gap between Max Verstappen’s time and that of his competitors.

The Grand Prix will take place on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. (Belgian time).
