Maximizing Solar Panel Efficiency and Self-Consumption: Important Changes in 2024

If you order solar panels now, Jean-Paul, you indeed risk that the installation will take place after January 1, 2024, and that is a game-changer, because installations after January 1, 2024 will not have a running meter Upside down.

What’s the difference? “You will no longer enjoy 100% of your solar installation until you consume the energy you produce”, says Régis François, of the association Be prosumer.

This means that if you consume the energy when you produce it, that’s fine. If the house is empty when your panels “make” electricity, and you haven’t programmed your washing machine, your water heater, etc., you are selling your electricity. But we buy it back from you at a lower price than what you pay to buy electricity in the evening, when your panels no longer work. Be prosumer estimates that this lengthens the return on investment: “We go from 5-6 years to 9-10 years.”

From now on, the more we self-consume, the more interesting it is.

Panels installed differently

A few years ago, installers recommended panels facing south, but this is no longer the case, because self-consumption is not optimized. “Today, we favor a multi-orientation of the panels, on two sides of the roof, explains Jeremy Kroonen, sales manager for the company Enersol. This makes it possible to avoid production peaks and to smooth the supply of electricity on a longer period of the day.

Batteries for storage?

Batteries have been strongly encouraged in Flanders, according to Mr. François from Be Prosumer, “with bonuses of up to €1,500″. “Flanders chose to put an end to it, because they felt that the combination of solar panels and batteries had become profitable, recalls Mr. François. But this incentive pushed people to equip themselves, and we see today Today there are fewer stalls in the north of the country than in Wallonia.”

The Enersol company already has around fifty installations with batteries to its credit, “and we are already ordering for 2024”, specifies Jérémy Kroonen.

Do I have to change something to its installation so that it is compatible with the storage? “An installation allowing storage must have a hybrid inverter, which allows, in addition to its solar function, to charge and discharge the batteries, explains Jérémy Kroonen. If the old installation is not compatible, it can be adapted, either by replacing the inverter or by adding a second inverter.” An expense that is not urgent if you have a counter that is running backwards until December 31, 2030.

The batteries measure 70 by 30 cm on the ground and are stackable. They cost around €900 per kWh stored, an expense to consider in the short or medium term, if your meter is not running backwards.
