May 1st, the ÖVP and the question of security

The SPÖ traditionally spent May 1st today at Linz’s main square, the FPÖ was a guest at the Urfahraner fair – for Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP), today was Labor Day, but today was a day to say thank you. Together with State Police Director Andreas Pilsl, he visited the water police unit stationed in Linz on behalf of everyone who works on public holidays and thanked them for their commitment.

The heavy traffic on the Danube underlines the need for ongoing police checks on the water. Stelzer also sent a security policy appeal to the European Union on May 1st: The state governor called for the rapid and consistent implementation of the tightened protection measures set at EU level the EU’s external borders and the detention of illegal migrants there.

KPÖ called for Mayday in Linz

But back to Linz’s main square: After the SPÖ leadership’s appearances, this became the stage for the march of the “Mayday” alliance, which includes the KPÖ and the Young Left, among others. Under the motto “Social politics against right-wing agitation,” around 500 participants took part in the rally that started at Schillerpark.

“May 1st in the tradition of the labor movement stands for the fight for social justice and peace. “We are a long way from that,” invited Linz KP local councilor Gerlinde Grünn to become active in social politics. The Upper Austrian Communist Party’s top candidate for the National Council election, Christina Pree, spoke of how “the fight for a better world” can only succeed together. The list of demands ranged from the right to affordable housing to the introduction of property taxes.

The Neos and Education Day

Change of scene to the Neos: The Pinks traditionally did not celebrate Labor Day today, but rather Education Day. Neos state parliament member Julia Bammer took this as an opportunity to submit a written request to Deputy State Governor Christine Haberlander (VP). Bammer wants to know from the state education councilor to what extent there is a shortage of school directors in Upper Austria.

Among other things, it calls for an assessment of the expected retirements and necessary new appointments by 2029. The Neos politician was convinced that the situation would be further exacerbated by the lack of administrative support for school principals. Especially at compulsory schools, where the directors often have to get by without any secretarial support, the pressure is high and relief is necessary.
