Maya Angelo, a well – known poet and civil rights activist, is the first black person to feature on a U.S. coin. Maya Angelo’s face was featured on a 25-cent coin issued by the U.S. Treasury Department.
Last year, the government decided to issue coins with the faces of prominent women in American history. This is the first coin to go down like this. Along with Martin Luther King, Maya is best known as a singer, actress, playwright and director who fought for the rights of blacks.
