BRUSSELS | Little affected by the criticism of the leader of the opposition who accuses him of being “disconnected” on the tram, Bruno Marchand replies that he defends the citizens of the periphery and slays in passing the inconsistency of his opponent.

Barely landed in Brussels for the third part of his 10-day mission to Europe, the mayor of Quebec has faced fire from the official opposition, which does not appreciate that the mayor has mentioned his desire to start thinking about a phase 3 of the tramway. Chef Claude Villeneuve believes that in Europe, Mr. Marchand is “disconnected from the state of the debate” in Quebec and that there are other priorities.

“Let him tell me as much as he wants that I’m disconnected, I think that’s not it,” replied the mayor on Tuesday morning.

If being disconnected means wanting to better serve people on the periphery, “then I am disconnected,” he quipped.

Planning

“This project must serve the people of the north even better. And it’s not just a tram and that means planning it. And we know it takes time. And not planning it means telling the people of the north: “We don’t take care of you, it’s not important.” I will never say that and I will take care of it as a priority.

He notes an inconsistency in the speech of the official opposition of Quebec first, the former party of mayor Régis Labeaume, which has always positioned itself in favor of the tramway, but which recently gives signs of wanting to distance itself from it. .

“Where’s that party going?”

“I don’t understand them anymore. Mr. Villeneuve said that we have to think about phase two. We tell him that we agree and that we have to come up with a long-term plan for phases two and three and he tells us that we shouldn’t do that. I don’t understand where this party is going.”

It even calls for a reflection for each of the elected representatives of Quebec first. “They all said they were for the tram and right now we don’t feel like they’re allies. They have to reflect in their soul and conscience on how they position themselves in front of the population. Because right now, supporting the tramway, I don’t think that’s what they’re doing.”
