Mayor Jomo Osman Faces Legal Claim Over Fuel Queue Assault

Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman faces a K297.8 million legal damages claim and a demand for a written apology from motorist Lordmarlven Nechavava following an alleged assault with a stick at a Mount Pleasant fuel station on 28 October 2026, Nyasa Times reported.

The legal demand places the mayor and the Blantyre City Council under mounting pressure. The confrontation allegedly erupted during fuel shortages and long queues that have become a major source of frustration for motorists across the country.

Legal Demands and Police Complaints

Lordmarlven Nechavava instructed Ritz Attorneys-at-Law to issue a demand letter on 29 October 2026. The legal filing seeks K97.8 million in general damages and K200 million in aggravated or exemplary damages, excluding medical expenses.

The dispute allegedly began when Nechavava questioned Mayor Osman over an alleged decision to allow another motorist to jump the queue. Nechavava claimed he had spent three days waiting at the filling station.

According to the lawyers, Osman carried a stick and struck Nechavava during the altercation. The alleged assault left Nechavava with jaw injuries that made eating difficult.

Nechavava lodged a formal complaint against Osman at Blantyre Police Station a day before the legal notice was issued.

Ultimatum and Council Exposure

Yankho Kawalewale signed the demand letter on behalf of Ritz Attorneys-at-Law. The correspondence insists on financial compensation alongside a formal written apology for what the lawyers described as regrettable, deplorable, and despicable conduct.

Our client further demands of the mayor and the council a written apology for the regrettable, deplorable and despicable conduct. The payment and the written apology are required within seven days of the date of this letter.

The lawyers warned that failure to comply within the seven-day window will trigger drastic legal steps against both the mayor and the Blantyre City Council.

Neither Osman nor the council publicly responded to the allegations at the time of writing, and the claims remain untested in court.
