Gotham FC and Seattle Reign secure NWSL Shield and playoff spot

Gotham FC secured the 2026 NWSL Shield on November 2 with a 2-0 victory over Utah Royals on Decision Day, finishing the regular season at the summit with 61 points. Simultaneously, Seattle Reign claimed the eighth and final playoff spot by defeating Orlando Pride 1-0, squeezing past North Carolina Courage in a tightly contested finish.

Decision Day Stakes and the Race for the Shield

The 2026 regular season wrapped up with all eight matches playing out simultaneously, focusing intense spotlight pressure on two distinct battles across the league. Gotham entered the final fixture holding a narrow advantage at the top of the table. A win or a draw against Utah would guarantee the Shield without needing outside help. True to form, Gotham delivered a clinical 2-0 performance to clear that hurdle entirely.

San Diego Wave kept the pressure on by overcoming Bay FC 1-0. Yet, Gotham’s victory ensured the gap at the top remained fixed at three points, leaving San Diego in second place with 58 points. Both clubs had already locked down home-field advantages for the opening round of the postseason prior to the final whistle, but the afternoon’s results cemented their status as the top two tournament seeds.

Seattle Secures the Final Postseason Berth

Further down the standings, the scramble for the eighth and final playoff spot created high drama. Seattle Reign held the inside track and made no mistakes against Orlando Pride, taking a 1-0 victory that slammed the door on any alternative outcomes and brought their final tally to 47 points.

That result rendered North Carolina Courage’s 1-0 win against Denver Summit effectively moot. North Carolina finished ninth with 45 points, needing a Seattle stumble that never materialized. Denver rounded out the top ten with 41 points after losing their direct encounter.

The compressed table ultimately left eight teams out in the cold: North Carolina, Denver, Orlando Pride, Houston Dash, Boston Legacy, Bay FC, Racing Louisville, and Chicago Stars.
