Medellin: arrests for sexual crimes increased by 325%

According to the authorities, these actions seek protect minors and ensure that they are not instrumentalized in these establishments, thus safeguarding their well-being and rights.

Manuel Villa Mejía, Secretary of Security of Medellín, said that: “The strategy seeks to create safe and welcoming environments both for citizens and for those who visit us. During this year we have already carried out 30 interventions in various accommodations in the city, focusing on communes such as Castile, La Candelaria, Laureles, La America and El Poblado”.

So far in 2024, there has been a 10% increase in arrests for sexual crimes in general and a 110% increase in cases related to the sexual exploitation of girls, boys and adolescents. With regard to foreigners involved, the arrests for sexual crimes have increased by 325% and for sexual and commercial exploitation of minors they have increased by 700%.

“31 fines have been issued, the activities of 21 establishments have been temporarily suspended, and we have also carried out awareness-raising and control activities at 80 points in the city, reaffirming our commitment to the protection of our minors and the safety of absolutely all citizens,” added Mejía.
