Medical deserts: “We know there is an emergency,” admits the Minister of Health

2024-03-24 19:47:00

Appointed Minister Delegate in charge of Health and Prevention last February, Frédéric Valletoux recognizes in an article published in The Parisian this Sunday March 24 that “there is an urgency” to fight against medical deserts. Mayor of Fontainebleau for seventeen years, the elected official even explains that he considers the problem to be “topic number 1” of his mandate.

Medical deserts affect 85% of French territory, recalls The Parisian. Seine-et-Marne, where Fontainebleau is located, is particularly concerned: with a density of 89 general practitioners per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 114 in 2012, it is the 100th of the 101 departments in France in terms of concentration of general practitioners. The department is 96th in terms of caregivers. “It’s a phenomenon that has been going on for years and is getting worse because of the widening age pyramid. There is urgency but it takes ten years to train a general practitioner,” recognizes Frédéric Valletoux.

“Relieve doctors from administrative tasks”

At the origin of a law when he was still a deputy adopted by the National Assembly and the Senate in December 2023, which provides financial incentives for medical students to practice in deserted areas, the newly appointed minister confides in the weapons he intends to mobilize to try to compensate for the shortage of doctors . However, he is opposed to the assignment of young general practitioners to areas in tension: “The goal is not to scare away young graduates,” he insists.

Frédéric Valletoux, for example, highlights the revision of the numerus clausus in the first year of medicine, making it possible to accommodate 20% more students. “This solution cannot see immediate results due to the length of medical studies,” he nevertheless concedes. The Minister of Health finally proposes to improve the skills of certain medical professions. The objective: “to relieve doctors of administrative tasks which currently represent 20% of their time” and thus make the profession more attractive. “The Prime Minister announced the creation of more than 10,000 medical assistant positions by the end of 2024. We are currently at 6,000,” he welcomes.
