Years ago, when Harry was emotionally shattered by the death of Princess Diana’s mother, he traveled to South Africa for an extended vacation. The grandson of Queen Elizabeth II was looking for comfort and peace of mind in a foreign land. Botswana cured the august heir. Since then, the prince has been visiting the republic every year.

“Fifteen years I’ve been coming here, this sense of escapism – a real sense of purpose… I’ve had some of my closest friends here over the years,” Harry said.

In Africa, Harry met a married couple, Mike Holding and Tanya Jenkins, who own the wildlife documentary company AfricScreen. During the darkest period, the couple helped the red-haired prince cope with grief and take a fresh look at life. Harry considers Mike and Tanya to be his second parents, who contributed more to his upbringing than his mother and father.

“I have a second family there. A group of friends who literally raised me,” the prince says of Botswana.

The youngest son of Lady Di formed a particularly close relationship with Tanya Jenkins. The woman gives Harry the motherly love he desperately needs to this day.

Interestingly, in his time, Harry’s father, now King Charles III, was very worried about his friendship with a couple from Botswana. The fact that the son spent all the holidays under the supervision of strangers angered the heir to Elizabeth II.

In 2017, let’s add Meghan Markle found out about Harry’s second family. The prince took the sweetheart to Africa for a visit. The bride of the august child also quickly became imbued with sentimental feelings for a hot country. The former actress’s engagement ring features a huge Botswana diamond and two diamonds from Princess Diana’s private collection.
