Melting Glaciers and Crumbling Rocks: The Impact of Rising Temperatures on Mont Blanc

Since the end of August in the Alps, positive temperatures have been observed at the summit of Mont Blanc. The consequences are numerous, recognizes Jean-Marc Peillex, president of the Mont-Blanc community of communes and mayor of Saint-Gervais, one of the communes located at the foot of Mont Blanc.

At the summit of Mont Blanc at the moment, even at night, the temperature does not drop below 0°. HAS more than 4800 meters of altitude, this had never happened at the beginning of September“, he explains.

And rising temperatures mean melting glaciers, but also crumbling rocks. “These rocks are only held together by permafrost, this cement which is made of frozen water and sand. The accumulation of heat on the rocks causes increasingly significant rockfalls. Moreover, as of yesterday, the guides from the Saint-Gervais company have decided not to go to Mont Blanc for the moment because of this.”

For the moment, certain strategic points of the mountain are monitored. This is particularly the case for the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix, where there was a major rock slide a few days ago.

This implies a certain capacity to adapt, both for the guides and for the municipalities. For around twenty years, the mayor has sought to diversify the leisure activities of his municipality.

What we must understand today is that the mountain is changing and that we must not remain in a position of excessive pride that we too often have, by not wanting the postcard to change. Today nature lives, it does not ask us for our opinion. And it’s up to us to adapt, continues Jean-Marc Peillex. I think this is how all our countries will be able to face these changes in an intelligent way.“.
