New Brunswick public libraries are now making menstrual products available to the public free of charge.

In all, 63 public libraries located across the province make these sanitary products accessible and free of charge. These will be placed in the toilets of these establishments.

According to the government of New Brunswick, public libraries are places of choice to offer such products since they are located in both rural and urban areas and their clientele is diversified.

Recent data reveals that in the province, a significant proportion of women and people of diverse gender identities are forced to choose between buying menstrual products or buying groceries and paying the rent.is it written in a press release published Wednesday by the province.

The bill for this service will amount to $15,480 per year for small and medium libraries, and $24,000 annually for large libraries and resource centres. These amounts will be absorbed by the current operating budget of the New Brunswick Public Library Service.

A service for the population

Asked about the subject, the manager of the Laval-Goupil de Shippagan public library, Nadine Robichaud, maintains that this approach is good news even if the demand for this type of product is relatively rare at her establishment.

It must be said that it is a small library that we have in Shippagan, she specifies. But we installed the products in the toilets and we are very happy to have them.
