Mercedes-Benz Introduces Automatic Lane Change Assistance System for European Roads

2023-07-10 07:00:00

At the same time as the new E-Class, Mercedes-Benz will also be introducing the “Automatic Lane Change” assistance system in Europe, which is already available in the USA and Canada. It supports overtaking on highway-like roads with lane markings and structurally separated lanes and is a further development of the active Distronic distance cruise control with active steering assistant.

If a slower vehicle drives ahead, the vehicle can initiate the lane change itself in the speed range of 80 to 140 km/h and overtake completely automatically if lane markings are recognized and there is sufficient space. The prerequisite is a road with a speed limit and the vehicle being equipped with MBUX navigation. The system does not require any further input from the driver to carry out the automatic lane change.

With active route guidance, the system also helps when driving to exits and changing motorways. With a Level 2+ system, responsibility also lies with the driver during automatic lane changes, so Mercedes-Benz made a conscious decision to keep your hands on the steering wheel. (awm)
