Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff says Mercedes is ready to welcome Mick Schumacher to the F1 team as a reserve driver if he accepts the situation.
Mick Schumacher left the Haas F1 team after last weekend’s season-ending F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team has opted to replace Schumacher with Nico Hulkenberg in 2023.
Mercedes F1 needs reserve driver for 2023 Stoffel Vandoorne will be Aston Martin’s reserve driver while racing for DS Penske in Formula E.
Another 2022 reserve driver, Nick de Vries, has signed with Scuderia AlphaTauri to race full-time in F1.
“I’m really proud to have Nick back in a real F1 seat, even if the family has changed,” said Wolff.
“He deserves F1. His winning the world championship in Formula E shows that. It was right for him to be our reserve and it was right for us. The same goes for Stoffel. “
The Schumacher family has a history with Mercedes, with Mick’s father Michael Schumacher spending three years with the Formula 1 team from 2010 to 2012.
2020 F2 champion Mick Schumacher is targeting a return to the F1 grid in the future, with Mercedes open to accepting Schumacher into the team, Wolff has confirmed.
“Mick has always been close to our hearts, thanks to Michael and the entire Schumacher family,” said Wolff.
“Ralf has been in the DTM for us for a long time. His son[David]races with Mercedes in GT.”
“He’s an intelligent and well-mannered young man. He’s had great success in the junior formula.”
“I believe that if that situation arises, I would be the right person for the team and I would be able to take care of him, but I haven’t actually started writing the contract.
