Mark Zuckerberg is setting the stage for his new mixed reality headset. The Meta Quest 3 was officially unveiled this Thursday, June 1. A model expected for the end of the year and which should offer interesting novelties.
While Apple should lift the veil on its very first mixed reality headset (combining virtual reality and augmented reality) during its June 5 keynote, the Meta group has just unsheathed a new model as if to remind us that it is a pioneer in this area for several years. The Meta Quest 3 was unveiled this Thursday and is expected to deliver a premium experience for the mainstream audience it hopes to appeal to.
What price will it cost?
The presentation of the Meta Quest 3, expected to take over from the previous model launched at the end of 2020 in France, has lifted the veil on its price. And you will have to pay a minimum of 569.99 euros to obtain the basic version that can integrate 128 GB of data. However, it will be possible to add more storage, but for a higher price which has not yet been specified by Meta.
When will it be available?
Meta has not released a date for the launch of its new mixed reality device. Above all, the Californian group still has some information under its sleeve since a new Meta Connect conference has been announced for September 27. Date on which “more information will be communicated”, it is specified. A commercial release for the end of the year, at least for the United States, seems credible.
It should be noted that a price drop now accompanies the Meta Quest 2. From June 4, Meta will offer its current headset at a price of 349.99 euros for the 128 GB version, compared to around 449 euros for the current price, and 399.99 euros for the 256 GB version, against 479 euros.
What are the differences with the Meta Quest 2?
The Meta Quest 3 incorporates a first notable evolution compared to its predecessor: the visual rendering. The headset benefits from a thinner and thinner design than the Quest 2. The resolution is improved here, we are talking about a much higher resolution, to offer more finesse and a better visual field.
The Quest 3 aims to deliver a true mixed reality experience with “the ability to intelligently recognize and interact with objects in your surrounding space by allowing you to navigate that space in a natural and intuitive way that was virtually impossible before.” Meta continues, “Passthrough high-fidelity stereoscopic color, innovative machine learning, and spatial awareness let you interact with virtual content and the physical world simultaneously.” Meta intends to offer, for example, virtual board games that would come to life on the living room table. A technology which is not actually new but which could find real more convincing applications here.
Finally, the Touch Plus controllers have been redesigned to offer a system that is easier to use. The hoops that surrounded the wrists of the Meta Quest 2 have been abandoned here in order to integrate the TruTouch Haptics system of the controllers of the high-end Meta Quest Pro headset.
