Meta reported that recent capital raises by industry peers have created a challenging fundraising environment, leaving some to wonder if enough capital exists to support ambitious artificial intelligence spending plans across the technology sector.

Meta Raises Capital Spending Forecast Amid Cash Flow Deficit

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) posted a 26% year-over-year revenue increase to $64.6 billion alongside a free cash flow of -$2.1 billion, according to results released Wednesday. To accommodate its heavy outlays, the tech giant raised the low end of its 2026 capital spending forecast to a range of $135 billion to $145 billion while announcing a new class of non-voting shares designed to make future capital raising easier.

Here is the math on the broader sector: Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Meta, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) are projected to spend almost $780 billion in 2026 alone. Projections indicate they will spend more than $1 trillion annually from 2027 through 2030.

Executive Warnings on Capital Scarcity

Other industry leaders voiced similar worries regarding the availability of funds. Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) CEO Hock Tan warned that capital could become the biggest constraint on artificial intelligence development.

At the same time, BlackRock (NASDAQ: BLK) CEO Larry Fink noted that competition for capital was the fiercest he had witnessed in his career. Meanwhile, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang stated that neocloud demand is off the charts, but capital is scarce.

AI Stocks Lead Market Selloff as Investors Shift Weightings

Artificial intelligence-linked stocks led a notable market selloff following the earnings reports and executive warnings. Nvidia shares fell 4.4%, CoreWeave dropped 10.1%, and Lam Research (NASDAQ: LRCX) declined 11.8%. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell 6.8%, while the Nasdaq dropped 2.6% in its worst day in four months.

Money moved to other parts of the market rather than pulling it out of stocks entirely, according to Yardeni Research. The S&P 500 with every company weighted equally edged up 0.7%, whereas the version weighted by company size fell 1.2%. The Dow edged up 0.02% and the Russell 2000 gained 0.11%.

Yields Fall as Analysts Weigh Market Discipline

Treasury yields declined across maturities as these capital concerns mounted. Downward pressure pushed the 2-year yield down to 4.64%, while the 10-year rate dipped beneath 5% for the initial time in almost thirty days.

Yardeni Research noted that the rally suggests participants are increasingly concerned that tighter access to capital could slow the AI buildout. Even so, Yardeni expects the biggest players to keep access to financing, describing the market-driven tightening as healthy for the artificial intelligence boom because it should mean money is used more efficiently and the risk of overspending falls.
