MetaMask Staking Service: Professional but Pricey | Earn 3.8% with 10% Commission

MetaMask, one of the more well-known crypto wallet providers, recently launched a new staking service. As part of this, Ethereum users will be able to run their own validator node through the company if they pay for it. On January 18th announced the new element of the MetaMask portfolio by the company. If a user deposits 32 ether, MetaMask will run a validator node on their behalf. At the moment, we are talking about not a small amount, almost 80 thousand dollars.

MetaMask’s service is professional, but not cheap

You don’t need any hardware or tools, the company will handle the process for us safely and without downtime. This can be especially tempting for beginners and decentralization fighters, as you don’t have to worry about the centralization issue that exists with large liquid staking providers like Lido. Plus, you don’t have to buy devices and the issue of internet outages will no longer be a worrying factor. According to Consensys, which manages the service, they have not received any “slashing” penalties in the past 2 years, despite the fact that they manage more than $2 billion of ether with more than 33,000 validators. Malicious, improperly functioning validators receive the “slashing” penalty. As part of this, they lose their staked money and are also excluded from the network.

After beauty comes difficulty. Staking through MetaMask currently provides an annual return of 3.8%, however, the platform also deducts a 10% commission on validators’ rewards. As the operator of one crypto tracking app posted after the announcement, this would be an interesting opportunity, only the 10% commission is not really competitive. Currently, Lido is the largest liquid staking platform on the market, with 9.3 million ether. This corresponds to 40% of the 28.8 million staked ether. A quarter of the entire current Ethereum supply is now staked.
