Mexican officials announced on January 23, the metro system in the capital Mexico City had an electrical short, causing about 20 people to be treated later for smoke inhalation.

Metro system director Guillermo Calderon said the short-circuit caused “a very large amount of smoke” but the fire was quickly extinguished.

Officials say about 20 people are being treated, but none of them are in serious condition.

In recent weeks, a series of incidents have occurred in the metro system in the Mexican capital, leading many to question the safety of this public transport system.

Incident short-circuit It happened more than two weeks after the collision between two trains that left one person dead and dozens injured.

Mexico deployed thousands of National Guard members to its subway system after the incident. This is the most serious accident since the accident in May 2021, when a section of the railway belonging to subway system On line 12 collapsed, killing 26 people and injuring dozens more.

Inaugurated in 1969, Mexico City’s metro system is 226km long with 195 stations on 12 different lines. Authorities estimate the system will carry a total of 837 million passengers by 2021.
