Patras – EODY: The action plan after the 3 cases of meningitis in students – “There is no reason for concern and panic” – 2024-03-08 05:38:18

With vaccination and pharmaceutical coverage for the entire student population that came into contact with the third case of meningitis where registered as a student of Patras EODY, in collaboration with the 6th Health Region, attempts to prevent the spread of the disease.

Patras: The EODY team has arrived – The student’s condition is critical – 20 people who came into contact with him will be vaccinated

Early yesterday, in the morning Thursday 7/03/2024, the EODY team arrived in Patras, following the order of the Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidakis. This is because, according to international guidelines, the detection of 3 cases of meningococcal disease of the same group in an Organization (school, university, etc.), during a period of three months, constitutes an outbreak of cases and the extension of the administration is recommended chemoprophylaxis in a wider circle than close contacts and targeted vaccination in close contacts of cases.

THE ACTION PLAN

At the same time, the echelon started yesterday on-site information at the two Universities of Patras, Rio and Koukouli, where Departments of the University of Peloponnese are based and of course the authorities of the two academic institutions. Regarding whether the meningitis the two students contracted is viral or not, the laboratory results are awaited, which will give the answer with absolute clarity.

NO WORRIES

Regarding contagion and overcrowding due to the carnival season, Mr. Karvelis was categorical. “There is no reason to worry and panic. From the first moment, the 6th Ministry of Health, as well as all the competent health authorities, have taken the necessary measures, strictly observing the relevant protocol. I invite people to come to our city and have fun, it is absolutely safe environmentn”. This was followed by the meeting with the EODY echelon, during which the plan to deal with the situation and the vaccination of the contacts was discussed.

The deputy governor of Health and president of the Medical Association of Patras also cooperated on this matter Anna Mastorakou with the president of EODY professor of Epidemiology and Hygiene Christo Hatzichristodoulou. «We agreed that there should be wider chemoprotection for a wider range of students. And this, because the microbe can live in someone’s nasopharynx and be a carrier without getting sick himself. The goal is to achieve the wider “sterilization” of the population within the student community, in order to stop the contagiousness of the microbe.”

Also, Mrs. Mastorakou notes that there is no reason to use the meningitis B vaccine on a large scale. In any case, he emphasizes that “anyone who develops fever, headache, stiff neck and rash should seek medical attention. Thereafter, the triptych of prevention provides for good ventilation of the premises, no overcrowding, personal hygiene. These three must also accompany us to the carnival. Of course, it is difficult to avoid overcrowding, which is why we emphasize the aspect of caution and good ventilation of the premises, as we expect thousands of visitors”.

SYMPTOMS

According to the EODY announcement, clinical symptoms vary according to age. Most atypical images are seen in the neonate and infancy. The typical initial clinical picture of meningitis is characterized by sudden onset of fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, impaired concentration and myalgias in an otherwise healthy patient.

In a prospective epidemiological study, the classic triad of symptoms of fever, neck stiffness and impaired level of consciousness was present in 27% of patients with meningococcal meningitis, while it was more common in pneumococcal meningitis (58%). With the addition of rash, the percentage of patients who had at least two of these four signs rose to 89%. Other symptoms, such as headache, malaise, vomiting, convulsions accompany the disease. Seizures occur more often in children (20-30%) and less than 12% in adults. They begin as focal and secondarily become generalized. Focal neurological signs and seizures. Bradycardia, vomiting, swelling of the optic papilla may indicate an increase in intracranial pressure, so special care is required in the decision to perform a lumbar puncture. The rash is typical, appearing in 50% of patients during the first examination.

A 20-year-old student is hospitalized in critical condition

As far as the 20-year-old student is concerned of the University of Peloponnese, which is the third case recorded among the students of Patras from mid-January until today, continues to be hospitalized in a serious but stable condition in the ICU of the University Hospital of Patras.

The student is intubated and monitored by the professor and director of the Unit Fotini Fligou and her team. As happened with the second case, the 2nd year student of the Mathematics Department of the University of Patras, all the medical specialties involved with the vital functions of the human body affected by meningitis (pathologists, cardiologists, neurologists, nephrologists, etc.) are in alert and monitor the student’s condition.
