CHICAGO (AP) — Two-time All-Star Gary Sánchez was left off the roster of the New York Mets on Thursday, who reinstated catcher Tomas Nido from the disabled list.
Sánchez is 1 for 6 with three strikeouts and an RBI in three games with New York, appearing hesitant at times behind the plate. With two Mets catchers on the disabled list, Sánchez joined the club this month, signing a minor league contract.
He was called up to the majors on Friday after his strong offensive performance in his short stint with Triple-A Syracuse.
The team will have seven days to decide whether to trade, release, or send him directly to the minor leagues – an assignment he could decline if he prefers to become a free agent again.
The Venezuelan catcher also had his minor league stint with San Francisco before being released on May 2, signing with the Mets a week later. His best seasons were with the New York Yankees where he placed second in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2016, and earned two AL team inclusions during the 2017 AL All-Star Games, and 2019.
He was dealt to Minnesota before the 2022 season, and he hit .205 with 16 home runs, 61 RBIs in 128 games last year.
Nido has been out of action since May 7, due to dry eye syndrome. Plugs were placed in both eyes, helping to keep them lubricated and to improve his visibility.
The Puerto Rican stands out for his defense. He went 3 for 15 with one home run during his rehab assignment with the St.Lucie Class A team.
