A mayoral candidate was killed while meeting supporters in northeastern Mexico on Friday, authorities said. The stabbing was part of a wave of political violence ahead of June elections.
A manhunt is underway for the assailant who stabbed Noe Ramos, according to the attorney general of violence-hit Tamaulipas state, Irving Barrios.
Ramos died from his wounds, state security spokesman Jorge Cuellar told Milenio television station.
According to local media, the center-right candidate was walking through the streets to meet residents of the town of Mante when he was attacked by a man with a knife.
Mexican politicians are often victims of bloodshed linked to corruption and drug trafficking, especially in the run-up to elections.
About 30 people running for office have been murdered across Mexico since last June, according to research firm Laboratorio Electoral.
They included a candidate for mayor of one of Mexico’s most dangerous cities who was shot dead in the street.
Gisela Gaytan, who was campaigning in the central city of Celaya, was shot dead in early April while on a visit to meet supporters. (AFP/Z-3)
