Michael Penix Jr. Cleared for Full Contact: Impact on Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Competition

Michael Penix Jr. has been cleared for full-team work by medical staff, marking a major milestone in his return from a knee injury sustained in Week 11 of the 2025 season, according to AtlantaFalcons.com. The clearance gives the Atlanta Falcons a fully healthy quarterback room for the first time in training camp, adding depth and competition as the team prepares for the regular season under new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

Clearing the Final Medical Checkpoint

The journey back to the gridiron has been methodical for the former No. 8 overall pick. After undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL in November 2025, Penix spent months in rehabilitation. Throughout OTAs and minicamp, he participated as a limited player, throwing and running routes while avoiding contact.

Now, the restrictions are gone. “As far as a pocket, I can do everything,” Penix said. “If I had a rush coming at me and everything, I can get away. But it’s just, right now, if I don’t get away, that’s what we think about. If I don’t get away, I don’t think my doctor is ready for me to take those hits right now, but that time is coming real soon.” That time has officially arrived, bringing him his closest simulation of game action in nearly a year.

Mental Preparation Under a New Offensive Scheme

Penix spent his first NFL season as a full-time starter in 2025, opening the first nine games and leading the team to a 3-6 record before his season ended prematurely. He completed 60.1 percent of his passes for 1,982 yards, throwing nine touchdowns against three interceptions. This season, however, he enters a radically different environment governed by offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

Physical limitations did not stop the quarterback from grinding out the mental side of the playbook. During 11-on-11 drills, Penix shadowed coaches and players, running through mental reps, audibles, and post-snap reads.

“Everything in this game is reps,” Penix said, as reported by AtlantaFalcons.com. “So, the more you study, the more you look at the script, the more you look at the playbook, the more familiar you get with it. Each and every day, I’m just studying my [expletive] off and trying to get better every day by understanding the play calls.”

What Full Clearance Means for the Atlanta Quarterback Room

With Penix back to full participation, the Falcons boast a completely healthy quarterback room for the remainder of camp. Understanding the intent behind Tommy Rees’s play-calling has been the primary objective for Penix during his recovery, ensuring seamless communication between himself, the coaching staff, and the rest of the unit.
