Game News Microsoft and its studios top Metacritic ratings for 2021
This is information that is likely to cause a lot of ink to flow. Like every year, the essential Metacritic site, the same one that lists the opinions of the specialized press and players around the world, has split an annual ranking of the best game publishers. And it turns out that the year 2021 was marked by the victory of Microsoft and its in-house studios. Sony, meanwhile, is in second place.
To define this classification, Metacritic relies on a points system taking into account the number of games available, the average Metascore of these same games as well as the works having received a “bad” or “excellent” appreciation (for this, must exceed a Metascore of 90). By referring to all these data, we obtain the following top 10 :
- 1. Microsoft / Xbox Games Studios : 87,4 points
- 2. Sony : 81,3 points
- 3. Humble Games : 80,9 points
- 4. Activision Blizzard : 80,6 points
- 5. Bethesda Softworks : 80,2 points
- 6. Capcom : 80,6 points
- 7. Bandai Namco : 78,5 points
- 8. SEGA : 77,6 points
- 9. Electronic Arts : 78,3 points
- 10. 505 Games : 75,7 points
For the year 2021, it is therefore Microsoft and its partner studios who win the prize for the best publisher. With 87.4 points, the Redmond firm goes from 6th place in 2020 to the top of the podium. Users have thus voted for several titles, such as the immersive Microsoft Flight Simulator the exhilarating Forza Horizon 5 or the excellent Psychonauts 2. On the Sony side, the second place is quite honorable, but Destruction AllStars, noted 62%, sealed the ranking of the Japanese publisher. For its part, Nintendo is only in 14th place because the year 2021 did not allow the emergence of emblematic games (despite the excellent Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Metroid Dread) which would have made it possible to reach the top 10. As far as French publishers are concerned, Ubisoft obviously did not convince everyone with Far Cry 6 and Riders Republic and ranks 19th.
