Microsoft is cutting 1,900 jobs at Xbox and Activision Blizzard

The prank concert in the tech sector continues, this time in the gaming industry. Specifically, Microsoft wants to save a total of 1,900 jobs at Xbox and Activision Blizzard and Zenimax, like “The Verge” reported. The lion’s share of the layoffs is said to be taking place at Activision Blizzard, just three months following Microsoft acquired the company for $68.9 billion. Microsoft promises support and severance payments for the affected part of the workforce within the framework of labor laws. The planned job cuts correspond to around eight percent of the total number of employees in Microsoft’s gaming divisions.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, commented on the reduction plans: “As we move into 2024, the leadership of Microsoft Gaming and Activision Blizzard are committed to agreeing on a strategy and execution plan with a sustainable cost structure, which will support our entire growing business. Together we have set priorities, identified areas of overlap and ensured we are all aligned to the best growth opportunities. As part of this process, we have made the painful decision to reduce our gaming workforce by approximately 1900 positions of the 22,000 employees.” (doc)
