Microsoft Surface Pro 9: Newer hardware in a familiar look | Hands-on video

Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 9 in October 2022 as its new 2-in-1. This update does not seem to have major changes on the outside, but it promises to surprise you on the inside.

I wonder what this generation brings significant improvements over the past? TudoCelular shows you the details in this hands-on, in our partnership with the Italian brothers of HDBlog.

design and accessories

In terms of aesthetics, you might even get confused with its predecessor if you take a quick look at the Surface Pro 9. And it’s no wonder. We still find an aluminum chassis in the same dimensions as the Pro 8. This means that the new model measures 28.7 centimeters wide by 20.8 centimeters high and 9.3 millimeters thick. Not to mention the weight of approximately 870 grams.

But if you look closer, you’ll notice an absence for the latest device. Microsoft left out the P2 connector for headphones and microphone. A decision that could harm anyone who wants to listen to music or watch movies with greater immersion.

Anyway, you’ll still have here two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4, in addition to the proprietary Surface Connect and Surface Keybord.

In terms of accessories, there is nothing to complain about. The keyboard cover of the previous model is still compatible with the one now. The writing experience will not disappoint, despite not reaching a conventional notebook. Apart from the trackpad too small to dispense with the use of a mouse.

At least, the Surface Pen remains compatible, but now it has a flattened look, to be positioned more easily on top of the keyboard, in a space dedicated to the pen. The problem is that these accessories don’t come with the product and demand to pay even more to have the complete set.

Tela e udio

Starting with the multimedia part, here we find a 13-inch screen, with a resolution of 2880 x 1920 pixels and an aspect ratio of 3:2. The panel is made of IPS LCD, but Microsoft prefers to call it Pixel Sense Flow.

At least, the brightness is high to ensure good visibility in all situations, plus the refresh rate reaches up to 120 Hz. In other words, fluidity will not be a problem in the system or in games.

This display offers 100% color coverage in the sRGB standard, in addition to something around 80% for the DCI-P3 gamut. Don’t expect a benchmark experience on the market, but it won’t disappoint in conventional stills and video either. On paper, the quality remains the same as the previous generation.

Moving on to the sound part, the stereo speakers are limited by their very thin thickness, which prevents the presence of fuller sound outputs. As a result, you may experience some loss in frequencies, especially in the bass.

They have 2W of power, so the maximum volume can also be lower than you expect. At least there are dual microphones for good video call capture.

Hardware e software

Microsoft has equipped its new 2-in-1 with 12th generation Intel Core processors from the U Series. Here we have the i5-1235U. It comes with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB removable Samsung SSD. But you can find versions that go up to 32 GB and 1 TB respectively.

By the Surface Pro 9 proposal, this set should be more than enough to perform basic tasks without any problem, such as working tools and some simpler editing in Photoshop.

However, keep in mind that this is not a suitable product to run games, mainly due to the lack of a dedicated GPU. So only some lighter ones like Rocket League or Fortnite will be able to run here without big extras enabled.

Either way, as we have cores on this CPU dedicated to performance and others to efficiency, you’ll get a good balance between fast performance and plenty of time away from the outlet.

And by the way, this machine comes with a 47.7 Wh battery. Microsoft preferred a more modest capacity to not increase the size of its product. Even so, the Surface Pro 9’s optimizations should guarantee somewhere around 10 hours of moderate use.

At least, the 60 Watt source allows you to reach 100% in about an hour and a half. And if you prefer not to use the adapter through the 2-in-1’s proprietary port, you can do the process through a charger through its USB-C port.

In the software part, you will find a version of Windows 11 already installed at the factory. Microsoft doesn’t usually spruce up its own operating system for proprietary products, so what you get here is Windows in its purest state.

Cmeras

In the camera set, the Surface Pro 9 comes with a 10-megapixel main sensor on the rear. Its highlight is the autofocus feature, to improve the sharpness of images, in addition to supporting 4K videos.

At the front, there is a lens capable of recording in Full HD. This means your video calls will always be in high definition. It even supports Windows Hello authentication, as an extra layer of security when starting the system and making a purchase in the store.

First impressions and price

This can certainly be considered a great successor to the Surface Pro lineup. The new edition of Microsoft’s 2-in-1 retains the premium design and high-quality construction to remain at a high level with a compact body and very light weight.

Now, the Redmond giant has brought 12th generation Intel components in order to improve performance, without losing focus on offering satisfactory energy efficiency. It is the combination of performance and long autonomy in a single machine.

But don’t think you’ll be able to play the AAA titles over here. The absence of a dedicated video card still limits the experience in this segment to some lighter games.

The cameras also do not disappoint and deliver good features for the main functions they serve. We’re talking here mainly about 4K recording and autofocus on the rear lens, in addition to Full HD resolution and Windows Hello support on the front.

When we talk about multimedia, the Pixel Sense Flow screen continued correctly at 13 inches as in the previous generation, not to mention the high fluidity thanks to the higher refresh rate. The level of brightness does not disappoint either and guarantees good visibility even on sunny days.

Stereo speakers please, even if still far from perfect, because of the thin structure of the product. But keep in mind that they won’t reach what a Macbook delivers, for example.

A pity that Microsoft left out the headphone jack, as it was present until the last generation. This is a very felt and unjustified absence, as the dimensions remain the same and other larger connectors are still present.

Another negative point is the lack of accessories sent with this model. In other words, if you want to make the most of what it has to offer, such as a notebook or the creative part of the pen, you will need to buy everything separately and spend even more.

The Surface Pro 9 was launched in the United States for a suggested price starting at US$ 1,000, while in Europe it arrived costing 1,330 euros or more. Here in Brazil, Microsoft never brought this machine. That is, to have a unit, it’s good to be prepared to open your wallet and buy one with foreign value, which is not little.

Apart from the pen and keyboard cover, which should take a few hundred more for you to have everything at once. Perhaps a more affordable option is to buy a Surface Pro 8, which should cost less and still has the P2 port to plug in a headphone. But certainly the enthusiast of Microsoft products would have a satisfactory product in hand, if he acquired this latest 2-in-1.
