Migraines and Breast Cancer: Exploring the Link and Risks

While 20% of women are affected by migraines according to Inserm, a recent study has established a link between these repeated attacks and an increased risk of developing hormone-dependent breast cancer.

What if migraines were a risk factor for breast cancer? While Pink October is an opportunity to raise awareness about screening for this cancer which is the most common and deadliest among women in France, a recent study could have discovered a new disease factor. Multifactorial, breast cancer can, in fact, be linked to age, family history, genetic predispositions, lifestyle habits, as well as than recurring migrainesif we are to believe recent work published in the BMC Cancer magazine.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied data from 102,804 women suffering from migraine. Among them, 14,624 had migraines with aura, that is to say with a transient neurological disorder, such as visual, sensory, language and/or speech disorders, or even motor disorders. THE Another 15,055 had migraines without aura. It has thus been established that “any migraine is a risk factor for overall breast cancer and breast cancer”, particularly hormone-dependent breast cancer, which expresses estrogen and progesterone receptors. It is also the most common type of breast cancer. It accounts for approximately 80% of all breast cancers and has the best diagnosis.

What is the link between migraine and breast cancer?

While 20% of women suffer from migraines, according to Insermthe study also shows that participants with a history of migraine without aura would have a greater risk of developing breast cancer in general, but also breast cancer where the tumor has negative hormone receptors and cannot be treated with hormone therapy. While further studies of this type are needed to more concretely establish the link between breast cancer and migraines, the scientists suggest that “the mechanisms by which migraine could increase the risk of breast cancer are likely multifactorial.”

According to them, “migraine patients are more likely to have negative moods, anxiety, insomnia and even depression, which are risk factors for breast cancer.” In addition, migraine is a pathology that tends to increase sedentary lifestyle (another independent risk factor for cancer) due to its often disabling symptoms, they explain. The authors of the study therefore suggest that women prone to migraines, particularly without aura, be screened regularly for breast cancer. Last July, Public Health France revealed that 61,214 new cases of breast cancer had already been detected in 2023.
