Mike Pence’s White House Run: The Race for the 2024 Republican Nomination

Former US Vice President Mike Pence submitted his candidacy to the White House on Monday, according to documents released by the Federal Election Commission, and then he will have to challenge his partner Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election.

Pence, the nation’s 48th vice president, will launch his official campaign for the Republican nomination with a video and campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday, his 64th birthday, according to people familiar with his plans.

As Trump leads an early battle for the nomination, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis a close second in opinion polls, Pence supporters see a path to a credible conservative who embraces many of the policies of the previous administration but without sustained upheaval.

Pence’s nomination would be a return to the positions long associated with the Republican Party, which were abandoned when Trump reshaped the party according to his whims.

Pence has asserted that changes to Social Security and Medicare, such as raising the eligibility age, must be on the table to keep the programs capacity, which both Trumps have opposed.

Pence, who describes himself as “Christian, conservative and Republican” in that order, spent months laying the groundwork for an anticipated tour, holding caucuses in early-polling states like Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire, visiting churches and giving political speeches.
