Even if it remains in favor of a return to constitutional order through the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in power, the African Union does not however agree with the armed option against the Nigerien junta.

According to The world, this decision was taken on Monday, August 14, 2023, at the end of a “tense and endless” meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC), which is the body responsible for deciding on conflict issues. This position should be formalized on Wednesday.

On the other hand, the AU has chosen to “temporarily suspend Niger from all (its) activities”.

This volte-face by the institution arouses controversy since on Friday July 28, 2023, it had “demanded from the soldiers the immediate and unconditional return to their barracks and the restoration of constitutional authority, within a maximum period of fifteen days” .

The decision of the AU seems to strengthen the authorities of the transition of Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso opposed to the armed intervention against the Nigerien junta.
