Researchers from ConsumerAffairs, a customer rating and consumer insights platform, surveyed 1,000 pet owners, nearly half of whom were between the ages of 27 and 42, to determine how their pets rank in relation to family members.

« L’study started with a very difficult question: Which members of your family do you love less than your pet? To get an idea of what the future will hold, we also asked respondents if they would rather have pets than children” the scientists explained in a statement. The vast majority (81%) of millennials admitted that their pet means more to them than at least one member of their family.

Our survey showed that it was in fact most often their own siblings: 57% loved their pet more than their sibling, and exactly half said they loved their pet more than their mother. Perhaps even more surprisingly, even romantic partners come after animals for 30% of respondents. Along the same lines, 58% of 27-42 year olds said they would rather have pets than children. And this rather crazy observation is particularly true for cat owners, among whom the percentage jumped to 63%.

Owners ready to do anything to save their pets

When it comes to taking care of their pet, most millennials were pretty confident that they could afford to pay for life-saving health treatment for their pet in the coming month. And those who could not afford the cost of life-saving veterinary surgery say they are willing to take on a second part-time job (49%), sell goods such as televisions (43%), laptops (41%) or jewelry (29%).

This says a lot about the great relationship that develops between pets and their owners!
