Minister’s Crusade Against Muslim Religion: Executive of Muslims in Belgium Responds

The latter evokes, in a press release, a “new coup” and a “crusade” by Mr. Van Quickenborne (Open Vld) against him.

The minister had withdrawn, by his royal decree of September 29, 2022, the recognition of the EMB as a representative of the Muslim faith. The EMB office remained responsible for day-to-day business management.” However, even if this decree was initiated and drafted unilaterally by the minister, the latter never respected it”, indicates the press release.

The Executive of Muslims in Belgium responds to Minister van Quickenborne: “Incorrect, insulting and defamatory statements”

”Today, the minister continues his ‘crusade’ against the representatives of the Muslim religion. Indeed, a new non-profit organization was hastily created, namely the Muslim Council of Belgium, which has the same statutory powers as the EMB. It is interesting to note that the registered office of this new non-profit organization is located at the same address as the EMB”, underlines the latter.

A new royal decree recognizing the ASBL as the new temporary governing body of the Muslim faith is said to be in preparation, or even already signed, in defiance of the principle of separation of the Church (the Mosque in this case) and the State, freedom of worship and its autonomy, adds the EMB.

For its president, Mehmet Üstün, “this incomprehensible attitude of the Minister of Justice towards the Muslim religion is unacceptable and constitutes an intolerable interference in the freedom of worship, as recognized by the Belgian Constitution. This all the more so as the EMB asks the Minister of Justice to include it in the discussions relating to the representativeness of the Muslim faith and that it nevertheless continues to act in an occult and non-transparent way”.
