In this series, Mirco Canoci, our documentary information specialist, shares his reading recommendations. The objective is to introduce you to new authors, subjects or simply new stories, through the informed eye of our librarian. In this article, Mirco looks at a Franco-Belgian comic strip and introduces us to Coly.

Colby: The Story

The Second World War has just ended and three members of the Air Force find themselves unemployed and decide to open a private detective agency, in order to raise as much money as possible. Unfortunately for our soldiers, civilian life turns out to be more complicated and less easy than expected.

The story and the dialogues seem straight out of a cinematic thriller from the 70s and 80s. The atmosphere is very 70s with caricatured characters. You will find the blonde and sexy secretary, the American army soldiers having only big arms and no brains and the Japanese who are mean and rich. This is one of the many faults of this comic, but also its quality in the sense that these scenes between the characters are not devoid of charm and add a humorous touch.

The drawings are very beautiful with many details. I recommend this comic strip for lovers of Franco-Belgian comic strips and the special charm of old comic strips.

The comic strip was published for the first time in 1991. It is a trilogy, volume 1 appeared in 1991 and is called Altitude minus thirty. Volume 2 appeared in 1993 and under the title The sun died twice. Finally, volume 3 was published in 1997 and bears the title of Bombardier pour Mexico.
